Despite the fact that Double Fine’s raised $3.3M from Kickstarter crowdfunding for Broken Age (formerly Double Fine Adventure) this amount sees that isn’t enough to help the developer complete the game. So in in a backers-only update on Kickstarter founder Tim Schafer announced that the game is heading to Steam Early Access to raise more funds, which we feel is a bit odd since the game originally only had a $400K goal.
“Even though we received much more money from our Kickstarter than we, or anybody anticipated,” Schafer said, “that didn’t stop me from getting excited and designing a game so big that it would need even more money.”
Double Fine will release a refined version of the first half of the game through Early Access in January of 2014, which is expected to generate enough income to sustain production until the rest of the game is completed. Development costs will also be offset by the profits made from other Double Fine games.
Backers of the game won’t have to pay again. Instead, they’ll gain access to an even earlier beta in addition to Steam Early Access and the full game.
